Biography at time of election

Dr. T. W. Scott is recognised as one of the leading research workers in the world in lipid biochemistry of ruminants. His knowledge in this field lead him and coworkers to develop a novel procedure for protecting dietary lipids from microbial hydrogenation in the rumen. This allowed an increase in the amount of fat in the diet of ruminants without causing metabolic disturbances and permitted manipulation of the fatty acid profile of meat and milk. It also provided a new means of administering therapeutic compounds susceptible to degradation in the rumen.
As Chief of the Division of Animal Physiology and later Animal Productionf Dr. Scott has taken a leading role in guiding the transfer of technology to industry of a number of other developments arising from the research of the Division e.g. (1) Slow release devices for bloat control, iodine supplementation, and administration of anthelmintics, systemic insecticides and growth promotants.
(2) Biological defleecing agents to replace mechanical shearing.
