Dr Schofield has made an outstanding contribution to the scientific understanding of turbulent shear flows and his work is now included in standard texts in the field. He has applied this scientific knowledge to make major improvements to military gas turbine engines and other aircraft components that are now in operational use in the RAAF and RAN. Dr Schofield has taken the leading role in developing commercial arrangements with major international aerospace companies, to adopt these Australian innovations. He has recently played a key role in extending Australian contact with the Indonesian aerospace and shipbuilding industries and has led a series of teams of scientists and engineers to Indonesia. These visits have been extremely successful leading to a reassessment by Indonesian agencies of Australia's technological capabilities in aeronautics and naval architecture. This in turn has recently led to Australian companies being invited to tender for high technology work for Indonesian companies.
