Honorary Professor Xingjin Wang has transformed Australia's unconventional gas sector and demonstrated outstanding leadership in energy innovation. His discovery of enhanced coal seam gas (CSG) permeability contributed to the theoretical foundation that enabled the modern CSG industry to develop in Australia. Applying a breakthrough tight gas exploration approach, he revived the previously mothballed Denison Trough Gas fields, establishing Denison Gas as a growing, reliable domestic supplier. His work has secured hundreds of millions of dollars in overseas investment into Australia, created hundreds of jobs locally and established meaningful partnerships with the native title holders in Queensland. Honorary Professor Wang has facilitated landmark collaboration between the University of Queensland, international research institutes and industry to investigate the repurposing of depleted gas fields for compressed air energy storage projects. His innovations address Australia's energy security and resilience, as well as resource development and new energy technologies.
