Professor Yuthavong is a distinguished biochemist and an acknowledged leader of science and technology in Thailand. He has been recognised for his work on biochemistry of malaria and on the development of new antimalarials. He has been extremely active in promoting linkages between the public research agencies and industry in Thailand. His :position as Director of the National Science and Technology Development Agency places him in a powerful position to influence the science, technology and education :policies of Thailand. He has been active in S&T co-­ operation in ASEAN and has been instrumental in developing linkages between Australia and Thailand, notably through an agreement between ATSE and NSTDA.
