Newly announced STEM research fellowships for women have been named in honour of Professor Emeritus Doreen Thomas.
The University of Melbourne’s School of Engineering has introduced Doreen Thomas Postdoctoral Fellowships to celebrate the extraordinary career of the Academy Fellow and Director.
“This historic honour reflects Doreen’s remarkable achievements as a leader in Australian engineering,” said Academy President Hugh Bradlow.
“She is a trailblazer, and role model for many – particularly for young women in STEM disciplines.”
Among her many distinguished roles, Professor Thomas served as Associate Dean (Research and Research Training) at the Melbourne School of Engineering from 2008-2016.
The fellowships will be awarded to outstanding and enthusiastic woman doctoral graduates who are early in their career. The full-time positions will be offered across the three schools of Melbourne School of Engineering:
- Computing and Information Systems
- Chemical and Biomedical Engineering
- Electrical, Mechanical and Infrastructure Engineering.
Professor Thomas’s work has spanned the fields of mathematics and electrical and mechanical engineering over her 40-year career. She has made major contributions to human knowledge, and practical applications of her research have had substantial commercial impact.
The first woman in Victoria to head two university departments, Professor Thomas is a powerful advocate for women in engineering and mathematics. She has pioneered and championed gender equity in STEM and is an inspiration for many.
Elected a Fellow in 2012, Professor Thomas is Chair of the Academy’s Education Forum, Deputy Chair of the Membership Forum and a Director on the Board.
