Harry Poulos joined the Department of Civil Engineering at Sydney University in 1965, and was appointed a Professor in 1982, a position he held until his retirement in 2001. In 1989, he joined Coffey Partners International, and is currently a Senior Consultant with Tetra Tech Coffey, and also an Emeritus Professor at the University of Sydney.


He has been involved in a large number of high-rise and infrastructure projects in Australia and overseas. In 2014, he was inducted into the US National Academy of Engineering, and was awarded the 2017 ASCE Outstanding Leaders and Projects (OPAL) Award for lifetime achievement in design. Most recently, he received the 2020 Peter Nicol Russell Medal from Engineers Australia for his lifetime contributions to engineering.

Biography at time of election

Professor Poulos is a world leader in geomechanics research, especially in pile design, settlement analysis, and offshore geotechnology. Of his three books, at least one ("Pile Foundation Analysis and Design") is a standard reference in foundation enginee1ing. As well as being an outstanding academic, he is a leading member of Australia's foremost geotechnics consulting firm, Coffey Pa1iners International Pty Ltd, which now has a strong standing internationally, and pa1ticularly in Asia. Professor Poulos has been recognised nationally and internationally, through appointments and awards, and membership of the Order of Australia.
