Professor Melchers ia a structural engineer, nationally and internationally distinguished for his contributions to the science and practical implementation of technological risk assessment techniques. At the request of government agencies and private enterprise he has made major contributions to resolving life safety and system performance issues associated with some very significant Australian infrstructure and defence projects, which has resulted in the saving of millions of dollars.

Professor Melchers is a leader in teaching and in competitively funded theoretical and applied research. His achievements are recognized by awards, fellowships, appointments to government advisory boards, national and international committees and international editorial boards.
