Biography at time of election

Prof Beck's research using risk based engineering methodology to address fire safety in building has saved lives worldwide.

His work has underpinned reform of building regulations, potentially saving the Australian construction industry $250 million p.a.
He has published widely and has received several major awards in Australia and North America. Earlier in his career work on protecting buildings from cyclones was similarly recognised.

As Pro-Vice Chancellor (Research) at VUT, Prof Beck has comprehensively
redrafted the Research Plan. He is developing strategic relationships with
potential customers and overseeing the expansion of research activities,
including the affiliation with the Austin Research Institute.
