Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering Welcomes ARC Review

31 August 2022

ATSE has welcomed the next steps announced by Education Minister Jason Clare for the review of the Australian Research Council (ARC). The Academy and its 900 strong fellowship of Australia’s leading applied scientists, engineers and technologists looks forward to working with the Australian Research Council.

As the government research funding body which covers the broadest remit, the Academy wants to see the ARC reformed as a lighthouse which other granting bodies can be guided by. It is essential that the funding process has certainty, transparency and efficiency.

ATSE also supports that the Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) evaluation round will not be undertaken in 2023. In a recent government submission, ATSE recommended to reduce the frequency of ERA and extend the reference period.

The Academy looks forward to participating in this review led by ATSE Fellow Professor Margaret Sheil AO FTSE FAA.

We also look forward to working with Professor Mark Hutchinson and Professor Susan Dodds to address grant-writing red tape and support the ARC to invest in the research Australia needs for a technology powered, human driven future.
