Remembering a trailblazing seafood scientist

14 October 2019

Professor June Norma Olley AM FTSE, a world-renowned seafood technologist and influential role model for women and girls in STEM, will be remembered at an event in Hobart on Wednesday.

Professor Olley moved to Tasmania in 1968, where she joined the CSIRO Division of Food Preservation at the Tasmanian Research Laboratory.

There she led a number of projects, including modernising the burgeoning abalone industry and investigating the effects of heavy metal pollution on seafood stocks.

In 1989 she retired from CSIRO and became an honorary research associate in the then Department of Agricultural Science and also Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering at the University of Tasmania.

Professor Olley died on 29 July, aged 95.

The Tasmanian Division of the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering will hold a memorial event at University Club, 38A Dobson Road, Sandy Bay, between 5pm and 7pm on Wednesday 16 October.

There will be brief presentations by Gustaaf Hallegraeff, Jennifer Skerratt and Tom Ross to commemorate her career, followed by an open microphone.

Professor Olley was one of only two female Foundation Fellows of the Academy.
